Waterloo, ON – Focus for Ethnic Women will be hosting The Colour of my Lenses Photography Art Gala on Friday, March 30, 2012 at Waterloo Community Art Centre to highlight the end of this pilot project funded by the Ministry of Citizenship Immigration (MCI) under the Youth Opportunity Programmes. The event recognizes the artistic talent of local young immigrant women who over the last several months have been learning about photography and digital editing as part of “The Colour of my Lenses” skills, and leadership workshop series.

The event will include live music, refreshments, and a graduation ceremony for program participants. The photographs will be on display and for sale from Friday March 30th, 2012 until Thursday April 5th, 2012 for public view.

Focus for Ethnic Women has been providing life skills and employment readiness training to immigrant and visible minority women in a warm and supportive environment since opening its doors in 1988. These services help women to develop self-esteem, a sense of community belonging, and personal empowerment as they work to build a life for themselves and their families in Canada

All are invited to the premiering of new original photography by our participants in The Colour of My Lenses program. This is an opportunity to celebrate the new skills of the young women enrolled in this Youth Opportunities Program and also to learn about their journeys through photography.

The photo exhibit will be on display and for sale from March 30 – April 5, 2012.

Focus for Ethnic Women to host Focus on Friends during International Women’s Week

Waterloo, ON – Focus for Ethnic Women will be holding the 11^th annual Focus on Friends celebration Thursday, March 8, 2012, during International Women’s Week. The event centres on an award ceremony recognizing local women who demonstrate the strong spirit of volunteerism for which Waterloo Region is known.

This year’s honourees are Margaret Skowronska-Binek, retired Immigration Lawyer originally from Poland, and Ann-Marie Marston, Customer Service Representative with Scotiabank, originally from Jamaica.

The event includes dinner, cultural entertainment and a popular silent auction, at Golf’s Steak House in Kitchener. Tickets are now available for $65; a $35 tax receipt will be provided.
