For Employers

Work Placement Information

Focus for Ethnic Women (FEW) is always looking for employers to hire our participants or provide unpaid work placement opportunities. We have a pool of participants who have graduated from our employment programs and are seeking work.

The purpose of a volunteer work placement is to gain Canadian work experience. Our participants are internationally trained professionals who need some experience in Canada along with local references and marketable job skills in order to develop a successful job search. In the end, these work placements will give our participants the tools for success.

There is no obligation to hire and you have constant support from FEW and participants with all the necessary preparatory training. Our program is educational in nature in its attempts to prepare women for the job market.

See our list of Previous Employers.

You would receive the following benefits while having one of our participants complete a work placement at your organization:

• Our participants are eager to learn and benefit greatly from on-the-job experience.
• Unpaid work placements involve observing some of your current employees to gain first hand information about different occupations. This is a very valuable opportunity for participants and local businesses.
• A low-risk opportunity to interview, select, train and assess a potential employee.
• Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) and Liability Insurance coverage for our participants at no cost to you.
• The qualifications of our participants as internationally trained professionals at no financial cost to you.
• No obligation to hire after the work placement is completed.
• Participants have chance to gain WHIMIS and CPR training at no cost to you.
• FEW’s support during the work placement partnership for the participant and the employer.

Guest speakers are a valuable addition to Skills Unlimited, FEW’s employment assistance program. Their contributions can include mock interviews, providing examples of good customer service, and discussing hiring procedures and life skills. Mock interviews help participants prepare for the Canadian job search process. Explaining hiring procedures and life skills is also beneficial to our participants who have not been exposed to this information in their home countries.

The Skills Unlimited, Healthy Lifestyles, and the Investing in Women’s Future programs welcome guest speakers to who can bring valuable new information to the group sessions. If you are a business professional/manager and are interested in sharing your knowledge with FEW participants, please contact us. It’s a great and rewarding way to give back to the community by instilling knowledge in our participants.

Email ffew@golden.net or phone us at 519-746-3411 for more information on being a guest speaker.

“I am so grateful for everything that you have done for me, from which I uncovered my skills and developed much confidence. If it were not for the excellent lessons, lectures and the practice you arranged, I wouldn’t have done so well in the job interview. Please extend my sincere gratitude to everyone in FEW. Wish you guys all the best! Thanks again!”

“The outdoor tours, the mock interviews and the guest lectures were extremely enjoyable and informative. I salute you for your efforts in bringing the guests and engaging the students in the process. In closing, I would like to wish all the staff the best of luck for the future. You were very hospitable and made my stay at Focus for Ethnic Women very pleasant.”
