Enhancing the quality of life of immigrant & visible minority women
The Healthy Lifestyles Program (HLS) is funded by the United Way of Kitchener-Waterloo and Area. The HLS community groups are held in the neighbourhood-community centres and welcomes all women born outside of Canada.
No registration is required and childcare is provided for this drop-in program.
Group facilitators work at creating a safe, caring environment in which women can make friends, learn about our community, share ideas/experience on parenting, relationships, healthy eating, child development, life in Canada, and much more.
Women feel connected and more confident in being a part of these groups and feel strengthened to manage daily challenges and plan toward a healthier future.
This program that encourages health, well-being and progress of the immigrant woman, her family and community is delivered from a number of centres across the Kitchener-Waterloo.

“I came to Canada as a new immigrant in 2006. My first contact with Focus was Healthy Lifestyles. I felt very comfortable and it was the one outlet I had from feeling lonely. Agnes encouraged me to pursue higher studies, my Master’s in Social Work. Week-after-week you can meet new people. It was their encouragement and their gentle push that I needed.”
Leena Jayakumar, Healthy Lifestyles Participant“We are like one family. We are visiting each other when we have events. When I had my last child, they came to my house with a gift. The stories that we share, the free air to talk and learn, the programs, and the different people are great. It gives me confidence knowing others are watching me, looking out for me.”
