FEW | 2019 SPRING COMMUNITY GRANT FROM KITCHENER WATERLOO COMMUNITY FOUNDATION (KWCF)
We are pleased and honoured to announce that Focus for Ethnic Women (FEW) has been selected to receive a 2019 Community Grant from Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation (KWCF) for our Focus on New Beginnings (FNB) program.
This generous grant will support our organization in welcoming and assisting newly arrived Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) to prepare them for their integration into our community, their new home! We welcome the newly arriving Government Assisted Refugees (GARs) at Reception House, which is their first stop in Canada and serves as temporary housing until permanent housing is found. Our goal is to increase their self-confidence, reduce anxiety levels, be a welcoming face and promote inclusivity to assist with their integration into their new surroundings. We want them to feel that they are now a part of our community and Canada. Since the culture, geography and society are totally unfamiliar to them, we take steps to introduce them to the community they are going to call their home. We keep the focus on cultural norms in Canada, cross-cultural understanding and basic English, all to assist them in their integration into our community. This includes familiarizing them with their immediate surroundings including walks in the park, visits to the farmers’ market and the Library. Standard greetings, Canadian geography and English names of necessities for their lives in Canada are included in this program. Beyond these elements, we also introduce them to local stores where they can purchase foods of their choice, assisting them with daily needs and the essential element of belonging!
Kitchener Waterloo Community Foundation (KWCF) recognizes the need to support this vulnerable population as it aligns with their mission and our mandate! Please visit KWCF.
